Getting ready to play roller derby

So you are interested in playing or having your kids play; awesome!  Here are the requirements to get started.

Basic Skate Skills

While we will teach your kiddo almost everything, there are a few basic skate skills required prior to registration.  Wearing quad style skates (no in-lines) skaters should be comfortable skating forward, stepping from side to side, and stopping safely / on their own (without running onto carpet or into the wall).

If your child has these basic skate skills, they can join our New Skater Program.  The New Skater Program is a 10 week roller derby skill building opportunity.  The New Skater Program has 3 start dates available throughout the season.  For more information on our New Skater Program, please see our Registration page

Skate School - Learn the basics

Skateworld Tacoma offers Skate School every Saturday morning.  Skate school is a great way to master the basics required for starting roller derby.  Class is divided into new skater and intermediate skater to ensure your skater is getting the best session for their skill level.  For more information (including address, time, and cost) please visit www.skatewordtacoma.com

Gear Required for Play

Every skater must have the following gear at every practice:

  • Helmet - Must be rated for multiple impact, no bike helmets allowed
  • Mouthguard - form fitted prior to first practice
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Knee pads
  • Derby style skates - low boot, low/no heal, quad wheels
If your skater does not have all of this gear, or you are unable to acquire gear, we have loaner gear available, and limited scholarships to assist in funding gear.  If you need to borrow gear, or learn more about scholarships, please email info@tomorrowlandjrd.com.
